ŌKO is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting individuals who use sign language as their path of communication. By empowering individuals and promoting greater understanding and communication across cultures, ŌKO seek to create a more inclusive and connected community for sign language.
CONCEPT
Sign language functions differently—it relies entirely on visual expression, using body movement and hand gestures instead of sound. While spoken languages offer clues through tone, sign languages are deeply rooted in culture and movement, making them harder to translate across cultures with traditional tools.
Through deep conversations with sign language users, I came to understand the real pain points: the lack of cross-cultural sign language platforms makes communication especially difficult while traveling, and the shortage of clear, accessible tutorials creates barriers for people who want to learn sign language.
APPROACH
In visual communication design, translating information into graphics helps users absorb content more quickly and easily. The audience for sign language spans all ages and cultures, it’s especially important to make the learning experience engaging and accessible.
Drawing inspiration from the natural movements within sign language, I developed a lively graphic system using motion graphics paired with a vivid, color-blind-friendly palette. Together, these elements create a visual language that is both dynamic and easy to understand.
