A revolutionary application designed to address the information gap and foster healthy communication relationships between First-Generation College Student( FGCS ) and their parents.
The project focuses on providing a comprehensive solution by incorporating four essential touchpoints within the application to help users improve their communication dynamics. The concept was born from the contrasting experiences of two FGCS designers, highlighting the power of diverse perspectives in creating impactful solutions.
The name "U-Nest" symbolizes the journey of FGCS, likening it to birds leaving their nests. It acknowledges the desire to maintain connections with home while building a new life, reflecting the emotional journey of FGCS
Impact and Learnings:
This project not only resulted in a thoughtfully designed application but also provided valuable insights into:
- The power of diverse perspectives in design
- The importance of personal narratives in user research
- The potential of technology to bridge emotional gaps
- The value of iterative design processes in creating user-centered solutions
The Challenge:
As first-generation college students ourselves, my classmate Lumi and I recognized a significant gap in understanding and support between FGCS and their families. We asked ourselves: "How can we leverage our different experiences to improve relationships between FGCS and their families?"
Design Solution:
After rigorous research and design iterations, we developed an application featuring four key features designed to strengthen family bonds:
-
Enlightenment: A non-verbal communication tool that allows users to express emotions through color-coded light signals, available both on mobile devices and as a physical lamp.
-
AI Diary: A voice-activated journaling feature that preserves thoughts and memories effortlessly, addressing the need for easy emotional expression.
-
FaceTime Plus: An enhanced video calling experience with topic generators and non-verbal reaction buttons, facilitating more engaging conversations.
- 100 Games to Play with Family: A curated library of online and in-person games, complete with challenges and progress tracking, designed to create joyful shared experiences.
